Excessive barking like many other negative dog behaviors may be caused for a variety of reasons, mostly human related. If we learn to change our behavior then our pet will change his. If your Dog is barking excessively then he is probably doing so for a reason. The three main causes for excessive dog barking are boredom, lack or socialization, and the need for attention. Let’s take a look at each of these causes and what you can do to ease the situation and thus help to reduce your pets barking.
Boredom
Dog are extremely energetic and intelligent dogs. They need proper exercise and mental stimulation in order to be happy and well behaved.
Taking your Dog for long walks, rolling or throwing a ball for him to chase and providing him with other physical activities will help. Making sure that he has plenty of interesting toys to play with when you are not home or otherwise occupied also helps. Providing your dog with simple obedience training and other mental stimulation such as puzzle balls will help to occupy his mind. Combining all these things together will keep your dog too busy to be bored and therefore will eliminate boredom barking as he has more attractive activities to occupy his mind.
Lack of Socialization
If your Dog is barking every time someone walks or drives near your home or every time he hears an unfamiliar noise then chances are he lacks proper socialization and is barking either out of fear or curiosity. Making sure that your dog is well socialized to other people and a variety of places and situations will make him far more comfortable when a new situation arises. The more your dog knows of the world the less curious or anxious he will be and the less reason he will have to bark.
Lack of Attention
When your puppy was small and wanted your attention he probably sat or stood before your and yipped or bark and you instantly gave him the attention he sought. In essence you unknowingly trained him to bark when he wanted attention. In order to get him to stop attention barking you are now going to need to teach him that barking will have the opposite effect.
To do this make sure that your dog gets plenty of attention and play time when he is quiet. If he barks to get your attention tell him to “Stop.” If he complies immediately then give him the attention and praise he wants. If he continues to bark, then ignore him by either turning away and avoiding eye contact or immediately leaving the room. When he stops barking, immediately return to the room and give him your attention and praise. It may take several weeks for your Dog to catch on but eventually he will learn that barking won’t get him the attention he craves but silence will.
Keep in mind that a happy, active and mentally involved Dog is less likely to indulge in any negative behaviors. It is up to you to supply him with the things he needs for both his physical and mental stimulation.
How To Stop A Dog Digging
Having a Dog that enjoys digging can be a real problem. It is important that you curb your dogs digging habit as soon as possible. Those holes in the yard are not only unsightly but can be a real danger to those visiting your home as well as your own family.
You need to understand that while some dogs just enjoy digging, most dogs dig as a substitute for something that is missing in their life. Knowing what your dog needs and meeting those needs is the surest way to eliminate this problem once and for all. Here are some of the most common needs that results in a dog digging.
Exercise
One of the main reasons dogs dig is because they need exercise. If your dog is confined to a relatively small area and has no means of getting enough exercise he will be forced to dig as a means to get the exercise his body needs. Dalmatians are very active dogs and they need to be exercised frequently.
Before placing your dog in a small confined area does not allow for the necessary exercise Take the time to play with him and exercise him just before you confine him. This may be all that is needed to prevent him from making those holes. Throwing a ball for him to chase, jogging with him, and other activities will give him the exercise he needs and hopefully tire him out enough that he will just want to spend the time in the yard relaxing.
Entertainment
Your Dog may also be digging because he is bored. A dog with little or nothing to do will find his own entertainment. Digging may be just the thing to keep him occupied. Providing your dog with a variety of toys that hold his interest may be the ideal solution to your problem. Providing chew bones, balls, soft toys and toys that make noise when he steps on them on bites them will give it a lot of variety. Hanging a large ball from a string in the middle of your dog kennel can provide your dog with hours of entertainment. There are also a number of puppy and dog puzzles available that will occupy your Dog for hours on end.
Shade and Security
Your Dog may be digging to get out of the heat or because he is feeling anxious. Making sure he has a cool safe place to retreat too will make him much less anxious to dig.
Supervision
If all else fails only allow your dog outside when you are free to surprise him. When he starts to dig tell him “No” in a sharp voice and then give him one of his toys to distract him. Eventually, he will learn that playing with his toys is what he should be doing.
There are many other things you can do to prevent your Dog from digging, but these tips will should do the trick if used consistently until your dog understands what is expected of him.
